IBM rolls integrated data center system

SAN JOSE, Calif. – IBM announced PureSystem, the next major generation of its blade server design that packs servers, storage and networking into one box. The system is part of an industry-wide trend to integrate and simplify the management of the increasingly complex pieces of a data center.

The PureSystems chassis holds four modules that can be any mix of IBM Power or x86 processor boards or hard or solid-state disk drive modules. The processor boards will initially be based on IBM Power 7 or Intel Sandy Bridge CPUs.

Two network switching modules slot into the sides of the chassis and use technology IBM acquired with Blade Network Technologies in late 2010. PureSystem will support 10 and 40 Gbit/s Ethernet, Infiniband and Fibre Channel over Ethernet.

The chassis also includes a built-in systems management unit based on an Intel processor. It automates the process of allocating the systems processors and memory to specific tasks, discovers new modules as they are added and handles firmware upgrades.

Multiple chassis can be linked together with up to four chassis in a standard rack.

“We wanted to engineer a system designed to last for a decade with upgradeable networks, servers or storage in form factor replaceable modules,” said Ambuj Goyal, general manager of development and manufacturing in IBM’s server group.

Users can generate multiple virtual machines running different operating systems as needed to handle their applications. PureSystems supports VMWare and Microsoft HyperV hypervisors as well as Windows Server, Linux and IBM AIX operating systems.

“Nobody has really thought through in this way how you support a hypervisor or OS as a workload with security and virtualization built in and flexibility for how you configure the system,” Goyal said.

IBM is pitching its PureSystem to all its Intel server and mid-tier and lower Power server users as the most flexible and cost effective of its servers. The design started four years ago as Project Clean Slate, effectively re-thinking the concept of blade servers IBM and competitors such as Hewlett-Packard helped popularize.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Carbon is predicted to replace semiconductors, conductors and even insulators in future electronic devices and its already happening one application at a time. The most recent conquest by pure crystalline carbon--graphene--is a new composite material that offers a more efficient and less expensive way of cooling electronic devices than copper alone.

By fabricated heat spreaders from a unique copper-graphene composite and connecting it to microchips using an indium-graphene interface film, heat is dissipated 25 percent faster than with the pure copper heat spreaders used today. The techniques is also cheaper to produce, since it uses less copper that conventional heat spreaders, and will be particularly useful for electronic devices that generate a lot of heat, such as lasers and power semiconductors.

According to North Carolina State University researcher Jag Kasichainula, the thermal conductivity of both his copper-graphene composite, which is attached to the electronic device, and the indium-graphene interface film, are higher than copper, and yet are cheaper due to the exscalating price of copper. The copper-graphene composite can be deposited in films as thin as 200 microns, according to the effective medium approximation (EMA) method of modeling thermal conductivity and determining the interfacial thermal conductance between copper and graphene.

Kasichainula has also created a blueprint for manufacturers wishing to quickly retool for fabrication of the graphene-copper heat spreader using an electrochemical deposition process.

As the U.S. presidential campaign heats up and unemployment continues to hover above 8 percent, we have been highlighting efforts to revive U.S. manufacturing as a way to put engineers and technicians back to work. What we have come to understand in our reporting is that the next engine of economic growth in the West is about much more than metal bending or the other metaphors associated with the post-World War II industrial boom.

Some economists, such as former Labor Secretary Robert Reich and Christina Romer, former chairwoman of the President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisors, downplay the role of manufacturing in job creation. Romer and others argue that lack of demand, rather than the decline of manufacturing, is the real source of persistently high unemployment. Reich, for his part, points to automation that adds value but shrinks the manufacturing workforce. Few would argue that those manufacturing jobs are coming back.

That is why “production” and its economic benefits are critical to a Western economic revival. We wholeheartedly agree with those who continue to argue that you can’t control what you can’t produce—the operative word here being “produce.”

Manufacturing, argues John Zysman, co-author of the watershed 1987 book Manufacturing Matters: The Myth of the Post-Industry Economy, has evolved to become a subset of production. The words are often assumed to be synonymous, and any debate over their meaning merely an exercise in semantics. In an economic context, however, production takes in much of what is created by the brain as well as the hands.

Zysman provides the example of the crane maker who wants to get into the business of port management, a booming sector in places like China. One way the crane maker might do that is to embed intelligence into his newest crane. The added value increases the chances that the crane maker will get a contract to run a port facility.

Production thus includes the vast service sector and the massive ecosystem that has arisen around delivering services. Services now account for the lion’s share of the U.S. economy; some estimates put it as high as 80 percent of the annual U.S. gross domestic product. The march of networking technology since the beginning of the manufacturing decline in the 1970s means many services can now be delivered via emerging infrastructures like cloud computing. Google and Amazon invest billions in server farms; producers can then leverage the technology to deliver what Zysman and his research colleagues call “cloud-enhanced services.”

In our community discussion about cloud-enhanced services, many readers have provided real-world examples of how the cloud and earlier networks have been leveraged to promote engineering collaboration. These are prime examples of how networks have matured into a new kind of utility that allows both service providers and manufacturers to add value to their products.

It is this capability, not the return of manufacturing jobs from China, that will again allow U.S. companies to compete in the global marketplace. As one contract manufacturer told us, too much money has already been invested in Chinese manufacturing operations to simply pull up stakes and move back to the States; but this same New Jersey manufacturer has been reinvesting in his own domestic operations in hopes of moving up the value chain to higher-volume, flexible manufacturing.

So there is a real distinction between manufacturing and production. Not only does America need to make more stuff, but it also needs to increase production of goods and value-added services that will create the jobs needed to revive U.S. and Western economies.

Value-added production really does promise, as the saying goes, to lift all boats.

SAN FRANCISCO—An investigation by a labor practice watchdog group that revealed serious workers' issues at Taiwanese contract manufacturer Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd.—which operates under the trade name Foxconn—could be a "moment of reckoning" for the electronics industry similar to what occurred in the footwear and apparel industry in the 1990s, according to market research firm IHS iSuppli.

The Fair Labor Association (FLA) issued a report last month detailing the results of a month-long investigation into labor practices at Foxconn. The FLA said the investigation uncovered "significant issues" with working conditions at three Foxconn factories in China, including workers working more than 60 hours per week and not being compensated with overtime.

The FLA, which conducted the investigation with the support of Apple Inc., one of Foxconn's largest customers, said that following its investigation in secured commitments from Foxconn to reduce working hours to legal limits while protecting pay, improve health and safety conditions and establish a genuine voice for workers. The FLA said it would monitor the situation on an ongoing basis to verify compliance.

Apple joined the FLA in January under mounting pressure from workers rights advocates and consumers concerned about working conditions at Foxconn in the wake of a string of suicides at Foxconn worker facilities last year.

According to IHS, the FLA investigation of Foxconn, the impact of the investigation could be similar to what Nike Inc. and other footwear and apparel manufacturers experienced in the 1990s, when damaging revelations over their use of sweatshop manufacturing resulted in the creation of fair labor standards for suppliers and ultimately led to the creation of the FLA.

"Much of the press coverage of the FLA investigation has focused on the impact it will have on Apple’s margins or on prices that consumers will pay for iPhone or iPads," said Thomas Dinges, a senior principal analyst for electronics contract manufacturing at IHS, in a statement. "However, the real impact is on the overall relationship of electronic brands with contract manufacturers like Foxconn. Brands now realize that the biggest risk in dealing with contract manufacturers lies in the potential public relations disasters that can arise from worker’s rights issues."

According to IHS, the Foxconn investigation underscores the serious risk to the public image of electronics brands inherent in their $360 billion relationship with the global contract manufacturing industry. The result of the investigation is likely an increased focus on compliance—as well as rising costs for electronics brands, according to a recent analysis from IHS.

EnOcean appoints former TI executive as COO

EnOcean appoints former TI executive as COO

LONDON – EnOcean GmbH, a building automation company that uses energy harvesting and wireless control, has appointed Matthias Poppel as chief operation officer (COO). Poppel was previously European director of embedded processing marketing and applications and Texas Instruments.

The COO's position is a newly created one in which Poppel will be responsible for the operational side of the business and reports to Laurent Giai-Miniet, CEO of EnOcean (Oberhaching, Germany). The objective is to align technology development with customer needs and to drive the internationalization of the company.

EnOcean, founded in 2001, has formed the EnOcean Alliance to help drive its wireless technology into the market. EnOcean manufactures and markets wireless modules that draw energy from movement, light or temperature difference to power a wireless signal to control remote building functions including lighting, windows and heating and ventilation. Self-powered wireless technology from EnOcean has been successfully deployed in more than 200,000 buildings worldwide

"Matthias' extensive background in developing innovative products for international markets is ideally suited to carry out EnOcean's development and business strategy," said Giai-Miniet, in a statement.

Poppel said: "As the leader in energy harvesting wireless technology, the company is opening up more and more new application fields – from smart home and consumer applications to solutions for industry, logistics and transportation."

Now, they say that goHDR, one of their early customers in the OpenCL for FPGAs program, achieved a significant reduction in development time and a dramatic increase in performance leveraging Altera's OpenCL for FPGAs. Working closely with Altera, goHDR ported its proprietary C-code to the OpenCL standard and implemented the code in an FPGA in less than a week – a process that typically requires 3-6 months using a traditional HDL flow.

Combining Altera's expertise in FPGA technology and goHDR's in-depth high-dynamic range (HDR) knowledge, the two companies leveraged OpenCL as a common language which allowed goHDR to rapidly develop an HDR-enabled television solution. The solution implements goHDR's proprietary video codec algorithm into an Altera FPGA, enabling existing televisions to display HDR video content at real time rates – at least 30 frames per second. By using the OpenCL standard, goHDR was able to work entirely in a C-level environment and quickly perform multiple design iterations on their FPGA design.

"HDR video has very large data and computational requirements, creating significant challenges for video processing on such platforms as televisions or set-top boxes. FPGAs offer a very compelling alternative to traditional multicore CPUs and GPUs, but we were not experienced VHDL programmers," said Alan Chalmers, innovation director at goHDR Ltd. "Altera's OpenCL solution was a great fit for our HDR television applications, making them very easy to implement. Working with Altera's OpenCL for FPGAs program, we were able to get our system up and running in less than a week and meet our project's performance requirements with a limited amount of development time."

goHDR (www.gohdr.com) provides advanced data compression algorithms to customers developing HDR technology. The encoding/decoding software developed by goHDR enables the adoption of HDR video across many sectors, including film and television, computer games, security and mobile devices.

As part of the program, Altera initiated work with early customers, academia and standards groups to define and develop an OpenCL for FPGAs solution. OpenCL for FPGAs combines the OpenCL parallel programming language with the parallel performance capabilities of FPGAs to deliver significantly higher performance compared to multi-core CPUs and CPU/GPU-based systems and shorter development times.

LONDON – Fabless consumer chip company MediaTek Inc. (Hsinchu, Taiwan) plans to buy Coresonic AB (Linkoping, Sweden), a developer of programmable baseband processor technology targeting wireless and broadcast technologies.

MediaTek did not indicate how much it would pay for the company but said the move had been approved by its board of directors and that Coresonic will become another wholly-owned subsidiary of MediaTek in Europe.

Coresonic AB was founded in Sweden in 2004 based on the results of a research project undertaken at Linkoping University in Sweden. From those beginnings the company developred its SIMT – single instruction multiple tasks – DSP architecture for wireless baseband ICs, which it licensed to MediaTek in February 2011.

"We have been very successful with expanding the use of our DSP architecture in wireless communications projects world-wide," said Johan Lodenius, CEO of Coresonic, in a statement issued by MediaTek. "This acquisition provides strong synergies for both companies as it enables us to increase the pace of introducing new leading wireless products through MediaTek's global network."

HP said its VAN software will be compatible with the emerging OpenFlow standard for software-defined networks. However, the new code does not require OpenFlow, it added.

HP and NEC are among a core set of vendors working with researchers at Stanford University and elsewhere on the OpenFlow specification. HP announced in February it will support OpenFlow on all its networking products by the end of the year. It already has as many as 60 customers testing out OpenFlow based on open source versions of the code.

OpenFlow creates in software what’s called a central control plane, a single point for managing everything in a network. It operates via software applications that classify network traffic flows and take actions on how and where they are sent based on policies users define in software.

The software aims to simplify and possibly even replace a growing collection of systems that create firewalls, balance shifting workloads, enforce security and handle other network jobs. Thus the technology is a potential threat to established network giants such as Cisco Systems.

A report in the New York Times last month said a new Cisco group called Insiemi is quietly working on software-defined networking products. The group is led by a trio of veterans including Mario Mazzola who helped set up similar groups that got Cisco into storage networking (Andiamo Systems) and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (Nuovo Systems).

Previously, Cisco limited its efforts on OpenFlow to customer-specific jobs. “We are trying to understand what customers want to do and build it for them rather than build generic [software] agents,” said David Meyer, a distinguished engineer at Cisco who said he had no knowledge about the Insiemi group.

Meyer said OpenFlow may be limited to niche markets. “It’s a pretty big bet that OpenFlow will become a general-purpose programming paradigm--I think it’s unlikely that will happen,” he said.

Revenues for January through March 2012 totaled NT$104.25 billion (about $3.53 billion), an increase of 1.7 percent compared to the same period in 2011.

　　奇石，西人译作“文人石”。然而，要了解“文人石”一词的确切含义，文人士大夫们常以寄情山水、啸傲烟霞、崇尚宗教为生活旨趣，而标志着这一东方精神特征的“奇石文化”则应时而生。这种文化更多的是建立在传统中国佛教“禅宗”与儒家学说基础上的。唐宋时期，随着各种宗教文化艺术的繁荣，此种雅尚更是演至巅峰；从此，记载文人贤士们的赏石逸闻便不胜杖举了。
　　长期以来，奇石的美学集形、色、声、韵于一身，体现了特有的东方“禅”文化趣味，折射出灿烂的东方哲学理念。
　　由于以中美、英日为代表的东西方学术界、收藏家群体以及各种科学媒介物的作用，东、西方文化艺术交流已发展到一个崭新的互融阶段。
　　1919年，美国波士顿博物馆开始收藏中国奇石，这也许是20世纪以来西方艺术机构收藏中国奇石的较早实例。今天，世界上许多国家的博物馆，都因收藏有神秘的中国奇石而声名鹊起。这种奇石一般泛指古代雅室案头或厅堂内外陈设的灵璧石、太湖石、英石、昆石，即所谓的四大名石。他们搜集的渠道一般是从东西方的个人收藏以及国际上各种艺术品拍卖中获得。近年来，在美、英、东南亚的一些地区，出现了一批奇石收藏家，他们频频举办风格多样的奇石收藏展，并出版专著，撰述赞美东方奇石文化的神秘特性。
　　这方面，以美国雕塑家理查德•罗森布罗姆、收藏家伊恩•威尔逊和苏珊夫妇等较为引人注目。作为美国人，他们努力排除文字等方面的差异障碍，对东方石文化长期潜心研究并从中享受着这一切给他们带来的无穷乐趣。古老的东方奇石正“落户”在大洋彼岸，成为东方石文化新成员家中不可或缺的至尊之“道”。显然，从他们对这些石头的研究与撰述中不难发现，这个“道”已经成为他们探求人类精神永恒支点的重要依托。

　　少数由专业人士运营的珠宝玉石公司虽长期坚持举办拍卖会，但限于规模，影响力始终有限。2009年以来，地处杭州的西泠印社拍卖公司和北京博观拍卖分别投入了较大力量推介当代名家玉雕拍卖，对推动当代玉器的拍卖起到了促进作用。
　　2009年12月20日，西泠印社拍卖公司在杭州秋季大拍中率先推出了首届中国当代玉雕大师作品专场，打破了大型艺术品拍卖公司当代名家玉雕拍卖的零纪录。28位玉雕大师的81件作品拍出68件，成交率达83.95%，成交额2619.23万元。就拍品材质看，81件以和田玉为主流，占到了76件，其中白玉为大宗，共70件，碧玉3件，青白玉2件，黄玉1件，其次是水晶3件，发晶1件，黑翡1件。高价成交品皆为和田白玉。全场4件拍品成交价超过百万元，俞艇的黄玉壶212.8万元居首，翟倚卫2007年作品倩影白玉牌168万元，马进贵2009年作品白玉错金夔龙纹文案十三珍156.8万元，高毅进2008年作品花开富贵白玉链瓶145.6万元。

The latest iteration of SEMulator3D 2012 now supports 64-bit voxels (3-D pixels that can be filled with any semiconductor material) enabling ultra-accurate modeling of 3-D semiconductor structures at advanced processing nodes.


SEMulator3D can model the micro-electro-mechanical structures on the most advanced semiconductors such as this FinFET SRAM cells with a high-K metal gate.

SAN FRANCISCO—STMicroelectronics NV has been ordered to pay about $59 million to NXP Semiconductors BV by an arbitration tribunal to settle a dispute over charges for wafers NXP supplied to ST's wireless joint venture in 2008 and 2009, ST said Monday (April 9).

ST (Geneva) said the arbitration tribunal, set up according to the rules of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), ordered the award in connection with "underloading" charges included in the price of wafers NXP supplied to ST-Ericsson, the wireless chip joint venture between ST and handset maker Ericsson AB, from Oct. 1, 2008, to Dec. 31, 2009. According to businessdictionary.com, underloading is defined as a "situation in which a machine or plant is runt at less than full capacity, usually to accommodate process time or production rate variances, or to insure its reliability."

In a statement, ST said the company was disappointed with the results of the arbitration, which it said were unexpected. But ST said the tribunal stated it chose not to address certain issues raised by ST, but that those issues would be part of a second arbitration before the same tribunal, which is scheduled to be heard in June. ST did not specify what these issues were.

"ST intends to vigorously pursue its claims in this second arbitration aiming to convince the ICC Tribunal to reverse the economic effect of its award in the first arbitration," ST said through a statement.

ST said the award would be recognized in its first quarter financials and is estimated to have a negative impact on the cost of the company's sales for that period. It is expected to impact ST's gross margin for the period by about 2.6 percentage points, ST said. The company lowered its margin guidance for the first quarter to between 28.9 percent and 31.9 percent.

SAN FRANCISCO—Taiwanese foundry United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) Monday (April 9) reported sales of NT$8.19 billion (about $277 million), up 9 percent from February but down about 15 percent compared to March 2011.

UMC (Hsinchu, Taiwan) said sales for the first three months of the year totaled NT$23.77 billion (about $804.27 million), down 15 percent compared to the first three months of 2011.

SAN FRANCISCO—EDA and IP vendors posted another strong quarter of sales in the fourth quarter of 2011, turning in revenue of $1.7 billion, up 10 percent compared to the third quarter and up 12.8 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, according to the EDA Consortium (EDAC)'s market statistics service.

For the full year 2011, EDA and IP sales totaled $6.13 billion in 2011, up 16 percent from $5.28 billion in 2010, according to EDAC.

Strictly speaking, both the fourth quarter and full year set records in terms of revenue. But Walden Rhines, EDAC chair and chairman and CEO of Mentor Graphics Corp., noted that EDAC began lumping IP sales in with EDA revenues in 2006—apples to apples comparisons with years prior to that are not possible.

But EDA license and maintenance revenue for 2011, which excludes IP and services, came in at $4.19 billion, up 14 percent from 2010 and the highest since 2007, when it totaled $4.4 billion, according to EDAC.

"EDA saw strong growth in 2011, but that came off of relatively weak years in 2009 and 2010," Rhines said. The EDA industry tends to lag the semiconductor industry by about a year, and the semiconductor industry grew more than 30 percent in 2010, he noted.

Computer aided engineering (CAE), EDA's largest category, generated revenue of $644.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2011, up 11.9 percent from the fourth quarter of 2010, EDAC said. IC physical design and verification revenue increased to $392.4 million, up 30 percent from the fourth quarter of 2010, EDAC said.

IP revenue grew to $432.2 million in the fourth quarter, up 13.4 percent from the fourth quarter of 2010, EDAC said. Services revenue totaled $90.9 million in the quarter, up 9.8 percent from the fourth quarter of 2010, EDAC said.

Printed circuit board and multi-chip module revenue in the fourth quarter of 2011 was $139.7 million, down 15.6 percent from the fourth quarter of 2010, EDAC said.
