Last November, a 12-member jury awarded Rambus (Sunnyvale, Calif.) zero damages in its antirust case against Micron and Hynix, finding by a count of nine to three that Rambus did not meet its burden of proving its case against Micron and Hynix. Rambus had argued during a three-month jury trial last year that the two companies and others colluded to fix the price of memory chips and shut Rambus's RDRAM technology out of the market.

LONDON – Ultrawideband chip company DecaWave Ltd. (Dublin, Ireland) has raised 6 million euro (about $7.9 million) in a second round of financing that brings the total raised by the company to 12.4 million euro (about $16 million).

The company also announced that Jim O'Hara, a former Intel vice president and general manager of Intel Ireland, has been appointed chairman.

DecaWave, founded in 2004, is a fabless company that is developing ultra wideband (UWB) technology for real-time location systems (RTLS) and wireless sensor networks (WSN). It's Scensor chip is a CMOS ultra-wideband IC based on the IEEE 802.15.4a standard that supports data rates of 110-kbps, 850-kbps, 6.8-Mbps, and 27-Mbps. The company sampled devices in 2009.

"DecaWave is entering the final critical stage of our development before we reach full commercialization for our ScenSor chip, and we believe Jim's decision to join us, along with the additional 6 million euro in funding from our investors, further validates and endorses both DecaWave's vision and our technology," said Ciaran Connell, CEO of DecaWave, in a statement.

DecaWave was co-founded in Dublin by company president and CTO Michael McLaughlin, a contributor to the IEEE 802.15.4a standard, and CEO Ciaran Connell, formerly of Motorola and Freescale Semiconductor. The company is privately held, and employs 25 in Dublin Ireland, with offices in San Jose California, Seoul South Korea, and Toulouse France.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--The nation’s smart grid is constantly under threat of real attack and potentially no amount of investment in securing it will help, according to a white hat security expert.

Speaking at DesignWEST panel on hacking the smart grid, senior research engineer Joe Loomis blasted through the buzz on smart grid and smarter energy technology, exposing the risks of hacking and full scale cyber warfare and the crippling effects it could have on national infrastructure.

“It’s critical infrastructure and society depends on it, making it a prime target for attack,” said Loomis.
Indeed, as smart grid technology develops year by year, so too do the opportunities for hackers with malicious intentions on national infrastructure.

Loomis pointed to the recent Stuxnet computer worm discovered in June 2010, which took out a large portion of Iran’s nuclear centrifuge control and disrupted the delivery of nuclear fuel with its payload.
That worm, whose origins are still not officially known, exploited multiple zero-day vulnerabilities, said Loomis, spreading quickly across the world and even ending up in a few systems in the United States, despite Iran being the clear target.

“What made Stuxnet more scary than anything else is the order of magnitude of sophistication over everything that came before it,” said Loomis adding that the success of the worm was proof of concept that cyber warfare was real and dangerous.

“The collateral infections are the scariest part,” said Loomis, claiming that analysis of Stuxnet pointed to it having been developed by over 40 engineers, though no country or group takes responsibility for it.

A similar worm, DuQu, was discovered more recently in September 2011 and is thought to have been developed the same team that created Stuxnet, though its purpose is apparently different, with DuQu having been designed to capture system information and keystrokes which could enable a future Stuxnet-like attack.

“People are actively pursuing cyber warfare as an attack method,” said Loomis, pointing out that the smart grid was a prime target for such an attack.

“Before, if someone wanted to shut off power to my home, the electricity company would have to send someone around, physically, to cut me off. Now, it’s all being networked and can be shut off remotely, which creates a dangerous risk,” he said.

With $3.4 billion in stimulus funds having been funneled into smart-grid technologies by the U.S. government, more and more American households and businesses are getting connected up to smart meters, with over 60 million predicted to be deployed this year alone.

That’s a scary prospect according to Loomis who claims there are already “multiple credible threats” out there.

“They could turn off our power if they wanted to,” he said.

The most difficult thing, said Loomis, was for individuals and firms to evaluate the risks and invest in protection accordingly. “These are systems that were never designed to be secured,” he said, noting that any investment may also ultimately prove worthless.

“No system is 100 percent secure,” he said. “Given enough time and access, you can reverse engineer the whole thing.”

Loomis added that even if the country, or individual businesses spent a great deal of money to secure the power infrastructure, it would still be open to compromise, and that it was thus up to every individual to determine how much money they wanted to spend on trying to plug up the security holes.

“I tell clients they should judge it on a case by case situation,” he said, recommending that people lobby for better standards and repeatedly test their systems for cracks.

“There are plenty of open source tools available that are ideal for protocol testing,” he said.

Intel uses the term tri-gate to describe its version of FinFET where the transistor is built in a upright fin of silicon with the gate structure wrapped around on three sides.

Netronome’s flow processors (NFP) are used for networking, security and content processing applications at data rates of up to 100-Gbps. Netronome's flow processors are designed for tight coupling with Intel Architecture (IA) processors and the current generation began with a technology licensing agreement signed with Intel in November 2007, reaching volume-shipments in 2011. The next generation, based on intel's 22-nm process and is due to sample in 2013.

Netronome said that its access to the Intel process would allow it to shatter benchmarks for flow processor performance, power and cost in network and security applications.

Access to the Intel foundry services includes a joint development and manufacturing engagement model that includes access to Intel EDA tools and proprietary modeling capabilities, Netronome said. Intel aids foundry users with design-for-manufacturing, design-for-test and design-for-reliability and with packaging, assembly and test procedures, the company added.

In addition, Intel's foundry service provides risk mitigation because multiple wafer fabs can produce ICs ensuring Netronome has an uninterrupted supply of chips.

“The kind of picture you can piece together from combining the data from a 3D accelerometer, gyroscope, processor, RF antenna, battery and biometric sensor is really amazing,” said Slycke, showing off a plethora of videos like the one below to illustrate his point.

NXP said it will use Catena's expertise to capitalize on growing demand from car manufacturers for engine emissions reduction and car-to-infrastructure, car-to-car and car-to-driver communication.

Rien Geurtsen, president of Catena Group, said, Catena is a profitable and growing company and an exciting place to work and with NXP's backing it would continue to expand.

After the acquisition NXP will operate Catena as a separate design company. This would give NXP access to Catena's patents, IP and proprietary development tools, while enabling Catena to continue serving third party companies, NXP said.

NXP said it will use Catena's expertise to capitalize on growing demand from car manufacturers for engine emissions reduction and car-to-infrastructure, car-to-car and car-to-driver communication.

Rien Geurtsen, president of Catena Group, said, Catena is a profitable and growing company and an exciting place to work and with NXP's backing it would continue to expand.

"Catena has already made a significant contribution to NXP becoming the number one chip supplier for the global car entertainment market, and so we look forward to many more years of success to come," said Rick Clemmer, president and CEO of NXP Semiconductors, in a statement.

Trident accepts Sigma's bid for DTV business

SAN FRANCISCO—Sigma Designs Inc. said Monday (April 2) it finalized a deal to acquire Trident Microsystems Inc.'s digital television (DTV) business for $21 million in cash, plus the assumption of some liabilities.

Sigma Designs (Milpitas, Calif.) announced last month that it made a "stalking horse" bid for the DTV business of Trident, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in January.

Sigma said Monday it was selected as the successful bidder for the assets of Trident's DTV business. The final cash purchase price remains subject to an adjustment for the closing current asset balance of the DTV business, Sigma said. Sigma's bid remains is subject to the approval of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware presiding over Trident's bankruptcy proceedings, Sigma said.

"With this transaction, we will increase our revenue scale, expand our product offerings, and will have the ability to leverage our combined operational resources and OEM relationships across some of the largest high growth connectivity markets," said Thinh Tran, Sigma Designs' chairman and CEO, in a statement. "We are focused on successfully growing the DTV business and our existing business and believe the outcome of this transaction will provide long-term benefits to our customers, employees and shareholders."

The transaction is expected to close during the second quarter, Sigma said.

Silicon dioxide nanometal offers alternative ReRAM

LONDON – Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadephia, Pennsylvania) led by Professor I-Wei Chen have developed a resistive-switching memory device based on silicon dioxide.

The key to the memory is the inclusion of platinum nanoparticles on a random basis, the variation of the distances between the metallic particles and their relationship to a quantum mechanical property known as the electron localization length.

Silicon dioxide is generally considered an insulator but in films of nanometer-scale thickness and with metallic inclusions it can be made to display a memory effect. The development of a resistive-switching non-volatile memory based on the CMOS-compatible material offers the prospect of an ReRAM memory with useful properties but a simpler material structure to some alternative proposals based on metal-oxide films.

The University of Pennsylvania research has been reported in a number of learned papers on different aspects of the technology and on models of the behavior during 2011. The behavior is ascribed to the tunneling of electrons between metallic islands of atomically dispersed platinum in amorphous silicon dioxide thin films between platinum and molybdenum electrodes. It is said that the trapped electrons and the local Coulomb barriers they cause can "choke off" the electron passage in the nearby nanometallic paths, making non-volatile memory possible.

Professor Chen is due to present an update on the technology and comparison with other ReRAM systems at a one-day symposium on emerging non-volatile memory technologies due to be held Friday April 6 in Santa Clara, California.

The electron transport system through the material is generally applicable to random metal-insulator mixes and has been demonstrated in silicon oxide and silicon nitride glasses with platinum inclusions as well as in perovskite transition metal oxides.

Professor Chen told EE Times that the materials are quite easy to make by the use of co-sputtering on to a substrate, although the exact composition together with final film thicknesses are significant in tuning the memory effect and voltage scheme. The research group had made individual devices with sizes down to 20-micron by 20-micron with film thicknesses of between 5-nanometer and 30-nm to 40-nm. "I see no evidence why it should not scale," Professor Chen said.

SAN FRANCISCO—Flash memory vendor SanDisk Corp. said Tuesday (April 3) that preliminary results indicate that the company will report first quarter sales of about $1.2 billion, below the company's forecast range for the quarter of between $1.3 billion and $1.35 billion.

SanDisk (Milpitas, Calif.) said its total gross margin is also expected to be below the previously guided range of 39 to 42 percent.

SanDisk is expected to report its first quarter results on April 19.

SAN JOSE, Calif.--With sensors becoming ever smaller and less expensive, full-body motion-tracking systems are becoming increasingly available, demystifying sporting success and putting computer measurable science into physical training.

Indeed, measuring human motion in 3D using MEMS sensors is becoming ever more important in modern sports, with coaches, parents and athletes themselves pushing for more qualitative and quantitative data about winning movements and individual technique.

At a recent MEMS in Sports panel discussion – part of a Sensors in Design session-- at DESIGN West in San Jose, athletes and engineers came together to discuss how less expensive accelerometers, gyroscopes, and microphones were revolutionizing exercise, not just for Olympic competitors, but for weekend warriors and fitness buffs alike.



Per Slycke, chief technology officer and founder of Xsens, a 3D motion tracking firm, said the effects of pairing GPS tracking with a full sensor-laden biomechanical body suit for sports like snowboarding, allowed for “extremely accurate insight,” not just into the boarder’s movement, but also into their location on the mountain and distance traveled.

“The kind of picture you can piece together from combining the data from a 3D accelerometer, gyroscope, processor, RF antenna, battery and biometric sensor is really amazing,” said Slycke, showing off a plethora of videos like the one below to illustrate his point.

Report: Semiconductor IP market to double in five years

SAN FRANCISCO—The semiconductor intellectual property (IP) market is forecast to grow from $2.5 billion in 2012 to $5.7 billion in 2017, a compound annual growth rate of more than 14 percent, according to a market research report by MarketsandMarkets, a market research and consulting company based in the U.S.

The semiconductor IP market is growing in both the integrated circuit IP and system-on-chip (SoC) IP sub-sectors, but the revenues from the SoC IP segment are expected to grow faster at an estimated CAGR of 19 percent from 2012 to 2017, according to the report.

The application specific and programmable (FPGA and PLD) IP segments in both ICs and SoCs are the fastest growing segments, next to the primary revenue contributor—the SoC processor IP segment, which is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 21.16 percent, according to the report. All the IP segments have much faster growth rates in the SoC segment than their respective markets in the IC segment, the report forecasts.

The global IP market's value chain has grown to encompass a vast network of players involved in various segments, according to the report.

Report: NXP sues RIM for patent infringement

SAN FRANCISCO—NXP Semiconductors NV filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM) Monday (April 2) in U.S. federal court, according to a report by the Bloomberg news service.

The suit alleges that Blackberry maker RIM infringes on six U.S. patents held by NXP (Eindhoven, the Netherlands), including technology for expanding the range of data transmission, according to the report.

The suit was filed in U.S. federal court in Orlando, Fla., according to the report. NXP is seeking cash compensation and a court order to block further use of its inventions, according to the report.

In addition to technology expanding the range of data transmission, NXP alleges that RIM is infringing its patents covering computer bus systems, mobile phones with GPS receivers, circuit manufacturing, the polishing of the surface of wafers and patterning of layers on a wafer, according to the Bloomberg report.

Generally speaking I’m not so interested in hearing news along the lines of “We’re Company A and we want to tell you that Company B is using our product.” Of course I understand why Company A wants to get the news out, but most of the time I think “So what? How does this make my little corner of the world a better place?”

Having said this, this particular news item pushed a lot of my “hot buttons”. First of all it comes from the folks at Energy Micro, who are based in Oslo Norway. If you check out their website (www.EnergyMicro.com), you will see that they come across as being a great bunch of guys and gals that you would like to meet and work with. Since I recently had a wonderful time in Norway in general and Oslo in particular [see Norwegian Odyssey (Stardate 19987+6)], I’m now kicking myself that I didn’t give them a call and drop round to see them … maybe next time.

Three more of my hot buttons are that this involves microcontrollers, low power, and e-paper displays. I love the concept of e-paper and I can’t wait for full-color versions to come out. I bet that sometime in my lifetime I will get to see print magazines in which some of the images are formed using e-paper and are dynamic.

Energy Micro, the energy friendly microcontroller and radio company, announces an agreement with Pervasive Displays Inc. (PDI) for using the EFM32 Gecko MCU to control low power e-paper (EPD) displays. The collaboration between the two companies will enable developers to reduce development time for applications based on the energy friendly EFM32 EPD platform.

Energy Micro’s Taiwan distribution and design partner, Retronix, provided technical and commercial support during the development of a new reference design to support the alliance.

EU project to develop high efficiency silicon thin-film solar modules

PARIS - German research center Forschungszentrum Jülich announced it is coordinating a three-year project aimed at accelerating the development and prototyping of nanotechnology-based high-efficiency thin-film silicon solar modules.

Recent efforts in thin-film silicon (TFSi) were made at solving industrialization issues, researchers said. In 2010, several companies demonstrated 10-percent stable modules (> 1 m²). The major bricks for efficient production are now in place. Next challenges are linked to the fact that TFSi multi-junction devices, allowing for higher efficiency, are complex devices, in which the substrate geometry and each layer have an impact on the full device.

Project partners said they will join forces to develop a new generation of thin-film silicon solar modules with an efficiency of 12 percent. To achieve this objective, the consortium said it will introduce novel materials, including multi-phase nanomaterials (such as doped nc-SiOx, high crystallinity nc-Si materials), stable top cell materials, nanoimprinted substrates and novel or adapted transparent conductive oxides.

Researchers said they expect to design and implement ideal device structures, taking into account the full interaction of layers in multi-junction devices. They will also control the growth of active layers on texture materials.

Project partners claimed they will work at processes that could allow a further extension of the technology such as very high rate nc-Si deposition or multi-step super-strate etching. Finally, they expect to transfer processes, including static and dynamic plasma deposition, from the laboratory to pilot scale, with first trials in production lines.

Indeed, partners said they expect to achieve solar cells with 14-percent stable efficiency, leading to the demonstration of reliable production size prototypes module at 12 percent level.

The EU Fast Track project has a total budget of 14.4 million euros ($19.2 million) and is set to receive 9.3 million euros ($12.4 million) in funding from the European Commission.

The eighteen project partners include Oerlikon Solar AG, SolarExcel B.V., CVD Technologies Ltd, Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Uniresearch BV, Technische Universiteit Delft, Technische Universität Dresden, Universiteit Utrecht, as well as France’s CNRS.

SAN JOSE, Calif. –Redpine Signals Inc. rolled out two Wi-Fi-based real time location systems tags, seeing an unserved market niche that is small but potentially lucrative for the second-tier Wi-Fi chip vendor.

Currently, RTLS tags are made by integrated system vendors who buy off the self Wi-Fi chips, package them into tags and sell them bundled with full systems and software. In this small market, retailers and warehouses that want to adopt the tags face start up costs of $500,000 or more, said Venkat Mattela, chief executive of Redpine (San Jose).

“The market size is nearly zero because the price is high,” said Mattela.

In hopes of enabling a broader market, Redpine will sell 2.4 GHz and 2.4/5 GHz 802.11n tags for prices ranging from $50 to $70 per tag and developer’s kits for $5,000. They will use open APIs and conform to the Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX) for Wi-Fi.

Mattela hopes the opportunity is one that is significant for Redpine but too small to attract Wi-Fi giants such as Qualcomm Atheros or Marvell.

“We believe the tag business alone could quickly become a $20-$30 million revenue generator,” he said. “What I’ve done in the last eleven years hasn’t come up to that,” he added.

The Redpine devices can be programmed to operate in a variety of modes. In CCX mode, they offer beaconing with configurable patterns, telemetry and alarm notifications. In Wi-Fi associated mode, they periodically connect to access points and communicate sensor and channel data to a server. In other beaconing modes, the devices support Wi-Fi clients with tag identification software to locate and identify assets.

“Redpine’s 5 GHz 802.11n Wi-Fi technology, support for enterprise security and partner ecosystem is a step in the right direction to accelerate growth in this market,” said Drew Nathanson, vice president of AutoID research at market watcher VDC Research Group, speaking in a press release.
